Exercises You Can Do Indoors

Recent government announcements now mean that we can’t travel beyond 2km of our home to exercise. For some of us, this might mean that getting out and about for a run, walk, cycle or jog is near impossible depending on where we live. Even if we can get out and about for exercise things like self-isolation and social distancing can make this difficult. So why not bring your exercise routine indoors?

We’ve rounded up some of the best exercises you can do indoors requiring little to no equipment!

Yoga

Yoga is a great exercise for both the body and the mind. Psychology Today says “Yoga increases body awareness, relieves stress, reduces muscle tension, strain, and inflammation, sharpens attention and concentration, and calms and centers the nervous system.” During these times you may be feeling anxious or overwhelmed so it might be a great time for you to start practicing some yoga. All you need is a mat (a rug or thick blanket on the floor will also suffice if you’re stuck). There are a lot of great resources available online. Youtube channels like Yoga With Adrienne or Body Positivity Yoga are very popular.

Circuit Training

Not only is circuit training a great way to build up your muscle, but it’s a great way to get your mind working too. By constantly changing up the exercises you are doing, your mind is constantly shifting with your body meaning you won’t be getting bored while you workout. Circuit training is especially good for those of you who enjoy running. Head to Youtube and find some videos that feature 5 to 10 minute targeted exercises and build a playlist to make your circuit. It’s that easy!

Strength Training

With a twist! Hoping to tone up your arms or legs but don’t have equipment at home? No worries! There are a lot of household items you can use to workout.

Got a staircase? It’s now a StairMaster! Get your glutes working by running or walking up the stairs (obviously being very careful not to trip or fall).

Tinned food in the cupboard? They’re your new dumbells!

Towels may seem like an odd item to workout with, but in these times anything will do. A towel can work as a great resistance band. You can see how to use it to tone your body here.

Something For The Kids

Got kids at home who are missing out on P.E classes? There’s no need to fret, there’s an indoor option for them too! Joe Wicks a.k.a The Body Coach has set up P.E classes over on his Youtube Channel. From Monday to Friday Joe will be posting exercise classes that are suitable for kids. The videos are all about 30 minutes long so you know your little ones are getting a good amount of their daily exercise. They’re not just for the kids though, take a break from working at home and join in with your kids. It’s a great way for you to get some movement throughout the day and a great way to spend some time with your kids doing something a bit different!
