Ageing is something we can not avoid, as much as we might like to. Whilst there are a number of creams, tablets and elective surgeries that can try to hold off the visible signs of aging, there are also a number of foods you can add to your diet in order to aid in slowing down the aging process. From your health and wellbeing on the inside, to your skin and hair on the outside, these five foods have some great anti-aging properties:

1. Garlic

Garlic is a very versatile ingredient and is easy to add to dishes such as stir-fries or pasta sauces. Not only will it add a little something extra to your meals, but garlic is also very beneficial for your health! For instance, healthline.com report that the active compounds in garlic can help to reduce blood pressure. Cardiovascular diseases are one of the world’s biggest killers so keeping your heart healthy with garlic can be extremely beneficial to your health, possibly prolonging your life!

2. Pomegranates

Pomegranates are a very underrated fruit. Not only do they make a lovely topping for granola and yoghurt at breakfast time, but they can also be added to a salad for a bit of crunch. The even better news? Pomegranates are bursting with vitamin C, and they have anti-aging properties. Throughout our lives, our skin is exposed to the atmosphere. Within this atmosphere are free radicals. These atoms can cause skin damage, therefore making us look older. Medical News Today says  “Pomegranate seeds contain a high number of antioxidants, which help protect the body against inflammation and free radical damage.

3. Sesame Seeds

In a time when veganism is very popular, there seems to be worry about bone health.  Whilst calcium can be sourced from vitamins, it’s thought that sesame seeds can help with bone health. Health Line say “Sesame seeds — both unhulled and hulled — are rich in several nutrients that boost bone health, though the calcium is mainly in the hull.” It is advised to soak or roast the seeds before consumption to reap the full benefits.

4. Berries

“Flavonoids, the natural plant pigments that give berries their brilliant hues, also help improve memory, research shows” Harvard Health. Berries also contain high levels of antioxidants that help protect the brain from harmful free radicals. Add some berries to a smoothie, or pop them on top of your cereal in the morning for a healthy brain!

5. Eggs

Eggs are a very versatile food. Have them on toast for breakfast, in a salad for lunch, or as a topping on a pizza for dinner! The yolk of an egg can help to reduce the aging effects on our eyes. “Egg yolks are high in lutein, a type of carotenoid that helps fight macular degeneration, the leading cause of legal blindness” yoursightmatters.com.
