Ageing and Alternative Therapies: A Look At Reiki Healing

It’s no shock that as we age, illness and disease begin to rear their ugly heads. Our immune systems often don’t function as they used to as we get older, our bones and joints can become stiff and uncomfortable, and our minds can become tired. All of this can affect our ability to fight off diseases and illnesses, as well as impeding on our ability to manage pain. This is where Reiki therapy can help.

Jinga Life spoke to *Danieli Rangel, who has been practicing Reiki since 2006, and became a Master Reiki Teacher in 2012. Danieli graduated in Biology and specialized in applicable Biochemistry, and has a passion to explain how Reiki and other holistic therapies influence our physical bodies without mysticism. Here’s some of what Danieli had to say about Reiki healing.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a therapy that promotes wellbeing by bringing our mind and body into a state of balance. Reiki, which is of Japanese origin, is made up of two Japanese words ‘Rei’ meaning “Universal Life” and ‘Ki’ which means “Energy”. (IARP).

When it comes to disease and illness, Danieli says “it is well known that over 90% of our physical problems are merely symptomatic. Which means that our mind is responsible for creating almost all the diseases that we come across today. The remaining 10% is most likely caused by a virus, bacteria or other kinds of parasites.”

What does Reiki do?

“According to Eastern medicine, the human being is not just a bunch of cells organised in specialised tissues and organs. We are light bodies that possess the ability to absorb the energy that surrounds us, and this energy is mainly absorbed by our energy centres, commonly known as chakras.” Reiki is used to promote a balance between these different energies, often referred to as yin and yang, or in the Western world, hot and cold.

The Medical bit…

Danieli notes that “The point where Eastern and Western medicine entwines is where our endocrine system is concerned. Our main energy centres are connected to crucial endocrine glands and if they receive only good or qualified energy, we have a perfect pharmacy working 24/7. Our proteins need an optimum temperature to work, (the aforementioned balance of yin and yang) as the hormones produced by our endocrine glands are basically proteins. As a result, thermal imbalance may influence our hormones.” This imbalance may cause several illnesses.

Not Just a Therapy but a Philosophy

Danieli explains that Reiki is not just an alternative therapy but a philosophy based on 5 principles:

“- Just for today, I will be grateful

- Just for today, I won’t get angry

- Just for today, I won’t worry

- Just for today, I will do my work honestly

- Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing”

Dr. Mikao Usui Ryoho (Founder of the original Usui Reiki Method).

“These principles aim to help people to keep their thoughts, feelings and words in a qualified vibrational pattern, enabling the perfect functioning of their chakras. This, consequently, leads to the secretion of all hormones when needed and in the right quantities.”

Reiki and Ageing

As previously stated by Danieli, 90% of diseases are created by our minds. “Good nutrition and physical exercise are only partially responsible for keeping our bodies healthy during our natural ageing process.”  According to the International Association of Reiki Professionals (IARP) “it is not an “either or” relationship between Reiki and medical treatments – Reiki works in harmony with other treatments for age-related conditions. Reiki is a complementary therapy that enhances the therapeutic properties of medicines and medical techniques while optimizing the natural healing process.” Reiki can help ageing adults find calm, manage their pain, and can even help in accelerating the healing process.

*Danieli Rangel is a Master Reiki Teacher since 2012. Over 13 years she has been pursuing the knowledge of the healing mechanisms practiced by ancient civilizations, especially Eastern.
